Arsenal news - Gunners in for £10m defender, 4-0 friendly victory, Djourou injured
Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Arsenal. Today:
4-0 friendly victory.
Arsenal continued their build-up to the new season with a comprehensive 4-0 friendly victory against FC Neusiedl. The result saw Marouane Chamakh score his first for the club early in the second half after he was brought down inside the box and stepped up to coolly slot the resulting penalty. His strike added to early goals from Theo Walcott and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Carlos Vela then scored a trademark chip to complete the rout. The victory was the last game of the club’s Austrian training camp before they return to London, stepping up their preparations by entertaining AC Milan and Celtic in the Emirates Cup this weekend.
Djourou injured.
There was mixed news on the injury front as Arsenal completed their Austrian pre-season tour. Kieran Gibbs continued his comeback, fizzing in a low cross for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas to double Arsenal’s lead against FC Neusiedl. Gibbs had been tipped as an outsider to make Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad before a broken leg against Standard Liege ruled him out for the season. However, Gibbs’ assist came a minute after an injury scare saw Johan Djourou withdrawn from the action before the half-hour mark. With Thomas Vermaelen and new signing Laurent Koscielny the only available senior defenders, Arsenal look worryingly short of cover at centre-half heading into the campaign.
Gunners in for £10m defender.
In the wake of Arsenal’s problems in central defence, Arsene Wenger is set to renew his interest in Everton’s Phil Jagielka according to the Telegraph. The paper reports that the Gunners have already had a £10m approach for the 28-year-old rebuffed, and with the Toffees appearing unwilling to sell, Arsenal will have to substantially increase their bid to land the Englishman. Jagielka is one of many defenders the manager is reported to be targeting after events in the last few days underlined the need to reinforce the defence. With Sol Campbell set to leave for Newcastle and Johan Djourou hitting a snag on his comeback from injury, Wenger will look to move quickly to add cover before the start of the season.
